After last month's deadly porch collapse, you might be wondering and worrying about whether you should've had a permit for your home improvement.

Pete Thomas of the Home Improvement Network gives his clients this rule of thumb:
"Typically, if they are adding, extending, enlarging, adding something new to their house, they need to get a permit," Thomas says.
